THE SUMMER SEASONAL COLLECTION RELEASE

THE SUMMER SEASONAL COLLECTION RELEASE

Our Seasonal Selection Series continues! Summer is sizzling, and we couldn’t be more excited to share the second exclusive cask of our new collectors’ series! With each turn of the season, American members of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society may look forward to a pitch perfect cask chosen specifically for that time of year. From pairing with seasonal fare to pouring for special occasions, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter will bear a special cask exclusive only to our American members.Cask No. 42.68 An Atlantic morning dip was chosen for its robust maltiness and refreshing maritime appeal. Why? To offer US Society members a dram that would hold up to the heartiest grilled fare as easily as a dozen raw oysters. The island malt on offer today conveys the invigoration equaled only by a brisk morning dip in the Atlantic!

Situated due north of Islay and due west of Oban, the Isle of Mull hosts a single distillery in the capital of the island. This distillery is unique in its distillation of both peated and unpeated malt throughout the year, offering two very different expressions for whisky lovers. Society members have been spoiled by both iterations of this island’s distillate, and today’s offering seems to take a little from each style. Whilst unpeated, our summer selection still picks up on some of the medicinal traits characteristic of seaweed based Hebridean peat. Combined with sweet and savoury notes of citrus, herbs and a faint smokiness, 42.68 brims with richness, nuance and a style that will easily suit every palate.Last night, Jenna Elie sat down with MALT Review editor Kat Aagesen on SMWSA’s YouTube channel to taste our summer selection – click here to view the stream

CASK 42.68

Cask No. 42.68

Title: An Atlantic morning dip

Tasting Note: The panel found this one initially sweet, medicinal and mentholated. Lots of barley sugars, malt extract, syrupy sweetness, cough medicines, herbal teas and fresh kiln air. Robust, malty and well-sinewed. Water revealed eucalyptus tea, menthol tobacco, varnished hardwoods, pine wood sap and herbal cough medicines. The mouth continued this medicinal theme with delicate notes of tar and embrocations. Bandages, pickled lemons in brine, malt vinegar and wood char. Reduction gave everything a lovely 'olive oil sheen' and brought robust notes of heather ales, aniseed, bouillon and a kiss of herbal smoke. Matured for 13 years in a bourbon hogshead before transfer to a 2nd fill heavily charred hogshead.
