April Hidden Gems from Jenna Elie
April Hidden Gems from Jenna Elie
At The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, we are on a passionate pursuit of the world’s most unique casks of whisky. Oftentimes the casks that turn out to be the most memorable happen to be the most unexpected. Here are three (3) Hidden Gems selected by Jenna Elie to consider for your home collection and for sharing.
Cask No. 6.57 Something for the weekend is the perfect name for this whisky, as it is pure fun in a bottle! This Speysider is full of bright spun sugar, tropical fruits and waxed wood on the nose. The palate, a Summer picnic of apples and jam, rhubarb custard and a little meaty duck confit to balance it out! The finish follows through with more waxed woods, jams and touch of minerality. We don’t see many Young & Spritely casks too often, so I am always thrilled to dive into these casks that live up to their name!
Cask No. 78.49 I hope you like jamming too! is a U.S. exclusive cask hailing from a Highland distillery known for their big, robust and meaty profiles! The nose bursts with bold notes of bergamot tea, rose water, and roasted almonds. The viscosity shows on the nose and follows through right onto the palate! Charred pine, tobaccos and earth notes of damp forest floor bring nothing but pure bliss on the palate! A whisky worth dramming and jamming to!
While single malt is at the heart of what we do, we never stray away from an opportunity to highlight the absolute magic of single grain whisky, especially from a Lowland distillery with such a history! The nose of Cask No. G8.19 Class in a glass is just pure elegance, with notes of rich balsamic, wood polish, chilli oils and stewed fruits like damson and fig. The palate keeps you at the edge of your seat with treacle, banoffee pie, warm profiles of rum raisin, tea cakes and candied orange peels. Truly, a luxurious experience in aromas and flavours! After 29 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, this went into a 1st fill ex- Oloroso hogshead to create nothing but class in the glass!
If ordered separately: Cask No. 6.57 = $105; Cask No. 78.49 = $130; Cask No. G8.19 = $275.
