May Hidden Gems by Scott Brunow
At The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, we are on a passionate pursuit of the world’s most unique casks of whisky. Oftentimes we discover true Hidden Gems amongst our whiskies. Here are three 'below the radar' casks chosen by Scott Brunow!
At first nosing of Cask No. 39.235 Got off on the right foot, you’ll get off on the right foot with this hidden gem. This 16 year old Speyside hits you with a blast of green apple Jolly Rancher, fruits, pepper and nutmeg on the nose. A perfect melding of fruit and spice make this a great summer time sipper. Overwhelming green apple, cinnamon, nutmeg, all turning slightly tropical great you across the palate. Add water and a slight tobacco and melon juice tease the taste buds. The spicy tartness of this one is truly a pleasure to sip.
Want to go sweet fruity and mellow? The U.S. Exclusive Cask No. 63.90 Sweet treat with a twist does not disappoint with aromas of fresh baked apples, caramel drizzle, and key lime pie. A smooth dance across your palate happens as fruit cocktail, cream, and maraschino cherries make their way over your taste buds. Add water and experience the creamy explosion, sweet pineapple and Pina Colada notes expose themselves. This will go down in history as a “sitting in the shade poolside” dram!
Cask No. 71.86 A sweet dream offers a truly great 13 year old and excellent example in our Juicy Oak and Vanilla flavor profile. An awakening of baked breads, citrus, and vanilla frosting hits you up front on the nose. The palate reminds of why we like this profile so much. Apples, pears, citrus, vanilla, nutmeg, and white chocolate waltz throughout your mouth. A drop of water brings out chocolate cheerios, sweet citrus zest, and more sweet vanilla cream. You’ll slumber into blissful peace and a sweet dream with this release!
